The Göreme Open Air Museum is a monastic complex carved into the rock, not a building: a cluster of tenth- to twelfth-century churches, chapels and refectories cut directly into Cappadocia's volcanic cones, with Byzantine frescoes surviving inside. The Karanlık (Dark) Church is the highlight — its low light preserved unusually vivid painting, and it carries a separate ticket from the main site. The whole complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking it involves uneven rock steps and a fair amount of climbing.

Bookable options split between quick access and full days. Skip-the-line tickets handle the queue at the ticket office, which builds up mid-morning when tour coaches arrive. Guided tours matter more here than at most sites, because the fresco iconography and the monastic history aren't explained on-site in much detail. The museum is also a fixed stop on Cappadocia's "Red Tour" circuit, usually combined with Paşabağ and Devrent valleys and lunch, and there are hiking-focused versions and private tours with wine tasting.
