The Neues Museum is worth visiting for the building as much as the collection. Bombed to a ruin in the Second World War and left roofless for decades, it was rebuilt by David Chipperfield and reopened in 2009 in a way that refused to fake restoration: surviving frescoes, bullet-scarred brick and blackened columns were stabilised and left visible, with new construction in plain concrete and brick clearly distinguishable from the old. The result is one of the more thoughtful museum buildings in Europe, and the damage is part of what you look at.

Inside, the draw is the Egyptian collection and specifically the bust of Nefertiti, displayed alone in a domed room at the end of a deliberate processional route — she is not photographable, and the rule is enforced. The Berlin Gold Hat, a Bronze Age ceremonial cone covered in calendrical symbols, and the prehistory and classical antiquities collections fill the rest.

The museum sits on Museum Island, a UNESCO site holding five museums, which is the main planning consideration: they are individually ticketed, and doing more than two properly in a day is optimistic.
