Adwa is the battle that changed how the world understood Africa. In 1896 Ethiopian forces under Menelik II decisively defeated an invading Italian army, halting the colonisation of the country and making Ethiopia the only African state to defeat a European power and retain its independence through the scramble for the continent. The victory became a reference point for pan-Africanism and anti-colonial movements worldwide. The memorial museum in Addis Ababa's Piazza district preserves artefacts, weapons, documents and narratives of the campaign, using interactive exhibits alongside educational and cultural programming.

The building is large and modern, opened as a cultural centre as much as a museum, and it draws over 50,000 visitors a year, many of them Ethiopian — this is a site of national memory rather than primarily a tourist attraction, which gives visiting it a different texture.
