Hunan Museum

Established in 1951, Hunan Museum is the largest history and art museum in Hunan Province, China. Located in Changsha’s Kaifu District, it houses over 180,000 artifacts, including cultural relics from the Mawangdui Han Dynasty Tombs, bronze wares from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and various ceramics and paintings. The museum offers free admission and provides guided tours, educational programs, and online exhibitions to enhance visitor engagement.

Hunan Museum exists in its present form largely because of one tomb. The Mawangdui Han tombs, excavated outside Changsha in the early 1970s, produced the best-preserved ancient body ever recovered anywhere: Lady Dai, a noblewoman who died around 163 BC, found with skin still soft, joints that flexed, and blood in her veins after two millennia sealed in layered coffins packed in charcoal and clay. Her tomb goods came with her — lacquerware, silk garments so fine they weigh almost nothing, medical and philosophical manuscripts on silk, and the painted funerary banner mapping the journey to the afterlife. The museum's Mawangdui galleries display all of it.

Beyond that, the collection runs to over 180,000 objects covering Shang and Zhou bronzes, ceramics and Hunanese cultural material. Admission is free with advance reservation, and the museum is one of the busiest in central China; slots go quickly.
