The National Museum of China occupies the entire east side of Tiananmen Square and is among the largest museums in the world by floor area, holding over 1.4 million items. Two permanent exhibitions define it. "Ancient China" runs chronologically from prehistory through the dynasties, and it is genuinely outstanding — bronzes, jade, the Simuwu ding, terracotta, ceramics and gold, assembled at a level that few collections anywhere can match. "The Road to Rejuvenation" tells the modern national narrative from the Opium Wars to the present, and is worth seeing as a statement of official history in its own right.

Practicalities matter more here than at most museums. Admission is free but requires advance reservation with passport details, security screening is airport-grade given the Tiananmen location, and the building is large enough that walking it is a real consideration. Reservations open on a rolling basis and popular dates fill.

Bookable options include entry tickets with the reservation handled, tickets bundled with Tiananmen Square booking — useful since the square itself now requires separate registration — and guided tours. Guides are valuable in the ancient galleries, where labelling is uneven in English and the chronology is dense. Some formats combine the museum with the Military Museum across the city.
