San Diego Natural History Museum

The San Diego Natural History Museum, known as The Nat, is dedicated to conserving nature through science and discovery. The strongest permanent exhibition is Fossil Mysteries, covering 75 million years of the region's palaeontology — Southern California and Baja were seabed, and the fossils reflect it, with marine reptiles, whales and the megafauna of the more recent past. Washed Ashore, built from plastic debris recovered from beaches, addresses ocean pollution through sculpture. Four floors, a giant screen theatre and rotating exhibitions fill out the building.

It sits in Balboa Park, which is the key planning point: the park holds around 17 museums plus the zoo, and multi-attraction passes usually make more sense than single tickets if you are staying more than a day. The park itself, built for the 1915 exposition, is worth time independently.

The museum's programming extends beyond opening hours. Nat at Night events on selected Fridays open the building in the evening with a different atmosphere, and the museum runs nature hikes and field programmes into the surrounding region.
