Amber Museum

Located in the historic Great Mill, the Amber Museum in Gdańsk showcases over a thousand unique amber exhibits, including natural lumps with inclusions, amber jewelry, and contemporary art. Amber is fossilised tree resin, and the Baltic coast holds the world's largest deposit — some 44 million years old, washed out of the seabed and gathered on beaches after storms. Gdańsk built a trade on it, and has been a centre of amber working for centuries. The museum, relocated in 2021 into the Great Mill, a monumental fourteenth-century Teutonic brick building on the millrace, holds over a thousand pieces.

The natural history section is the most compelling: raw lumps containing inclusions — insects, spiders, plant fragments, occasionally a lizard — trapped in resin and preserved in detail impossible in any other fossil. Alongside sit historical objects worked in amber, from religious pieces and caskets to jewellery, and contemporary art using it as a medium. The museum also covers extraction methods, forgery detection, and amber's historical use in medicine.

The Great Mill itself, restored after wartime destruction, is worth the visit independently.
