The Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum is a specialist institution with an unusually apt home: it occupies the Temple of Agriculture, the imperial complex where Ming and Qing emperors performed the ritual first ploughing of the season, directly west of the Temple of Heaven. Established in 1991 as China's first museum devoted to architectural history, it explains how Chinese buildings were actually made — the bracket sets that carry the roofs without nails, the modular timber system that allowed structures to be scaled and standardised, roof tile hierarchies, and the seismic behaviour of the joints.

Two exhibits stand out. A large model shows Beijing as it was under the Ming, before the walls came down, which makes the city's lost geometry suddenly legible. The caisson ceiling from the demolished Longfu Temple — an elaborate carved dome depicting stars and celestial figures, rescued when the building was lost — hangs as its centrepiece.

It is quiet, rarely crowded, and the temple grounds themselves are pleasant. This is a museum for people who have already seen the Forbidden City and want to understand how it stands up.
