The BMW Museum sits under a silver bowl beside the company's four-cylinder tower headquarters, and it covers over a century of the marque across roughly 125 vehicles and engines. The route runs through themed houses — design, motorsport, technology, motorcycles — arranged along ramps that spiral through the building. The range on show is wider than the brand's current image suggests: the tiny bubble-shaped Isetta that kept the company alive in the 1950s, the R 32 motorcycle from 1923, aero engines from its origins as an aircraft manufacturer, Formula One machinery, and the art cars painted by Warhol, Lichtenstein and Koons.

Directly across the road is BMW Welt, the delivery centre and brand showroom, which is free to enter and where new owners collect their cars — worth combining, and most tickets and tours assume you will. The Olympiapark is next door.

Practically, this is a half-day if you take in both buildings, and it suits families as well as enthusiasts given the interactive displays.
