Bunk'Art 1 occupies a bunker built for Enver Hoxha and the Albanian political leadership, a five-storey underground complex of over 100 rooms dug into a hillside on the edge of Tirana, designed to survive a nuclear strike. Hoxha's Albania was the most isolated state in Europe, having broken with Yugoslavia, then the Soviet Union, then China, and the regime built somewhere between 170,000 and 750,000 bunkers across a country of under three million people, expecting invasion from every direction.

The museum, opened in 2014, uses those rooms to cover Albanian history from the Italian occupation of 1939 through communism to its collapse, mixing historical documents and artefacts with contemporary art installations and sound work. Hoxha's own apartment and the assembly hall are preserved. The atmosphere — concrete corridors, blast doors, the temperature drop underground — carries much of the effect.

The entrance is through a tunnel, and the site is on the city's outskirts near Dajti mountain, reachable by bus or taxi.
