The Archaeological Museum of Chania moved in 2022 out of a Venetian monastery in the old town into a purpose-built modern building in the Chalepa district, gaining a great deal of space and losing some atmosphere. The collection covers western Crete from the Neolithic through the Minoan palatial periods to Roman occupation: Minoan pottery and larnakes, Linear A and B tablets, seal stones, jewellery, sculpture and Roman floor mosaics lifted from villas in the region.

Western Crete is less archaeologically famous than the Knossos end of the island, but it was densely settled, and the museum's material fills in a Minoan world that extended well beyond the great palaces. The new building's panoramic views over Chania and the sea are a genuine part of the visit.

It is a walk or short drive from the Venetian harbour where most visitors stay, which is the main practical change from the old location.
