Guangdong Museum

The Guangdong Museum, located in Guangzhou’s Zhujiang New Town, is a comprehensive institution dedicated to art, nature, culture, and history. Established in 1959, it houses over 320,000 items, including ancient calligraphy, ceramics, and Chaozhou wood carvings. The museum’s architecture is inspired by the traditional Cantonese ivory puzzle ball, featuring a multi-layered, transparent design. The Guangdong Museum's building is a puzzle box, literally: the architects modelled it on a Cantonese carved ivory ball, the concentric spheres cut one inside another, and the museum reads as a decorated container floating above a glazed base in Zhujiang New Town. Inside are over 320,000 objects across art, natural history, archaeology and Guangdong's own cultural history.

The Lingnan material is the distinctive part. Southern China developed differently from the north — earlier and deeper maritime trade, its own language, cuisine, opera and craft traditions — and the museum covers Chaozhou wood carving, Canton export porcelain and enamels made for European markets, and the region's role as China's window on foreign trade for centuries through the Canton system.

Natural history and palaeontology sections cover the subtropical south, with dinosaur material from Guangdong.

Admission is free with real-name timed booking, and it closes on Mondays. It sits close to the Canton Tower and the opera house in the modern district.
