Kwame Nkrumah led Ghana to independence in 1957, the first sub-Saharan African colony to break free, and made the country the intellectual centre of Pan-Africanism — the argument that African liberation had to be continental rather than national. The memorial park in Accra stands on the site where he declared independence, and holds his mausoleum: a structure shaped like an upturned sword, faced in Italian marble, with his tomb and that of his wife beneath.

The museum alongside covers his life, the independence movement, his presidency, the 1966 coup that removed him while he was abroad, and his exile and death in Romania. Photographs show him with Nasser, Castro, Kennedy, Zhou Enlai and Malcolm X, which places Ghana at the centre of a wider mid-century politics.

Fountains, statuary and gardens fill the park around it. The seated bronze of Nkrumah faces the sea, deliberately.
