Museum of Fine Arts of Seville

Housed in a 16th-century convent, the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville showcases an extensive collection of Spanish art from the medieval period to the early 20th century, with a particular emphasis on Sevillian Baroque artists like Murillo, Zurbarán, and Valdés Leal. The Museum of Fine Arts of Seville is generally reckoned second only to the Prado among Spanish picture collections, and it is a fraction as busy. It occupies the sixteenth-century Convento de la Merced, a Mannerist building arranged around three courtyards planted with orange trees and jasmine, and the building alone justifies the visit — particularly the former church, now a gallery hung with Murillo beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling and painted dome.

The collection's strength is Sevillian Baroque, which was one of the great moments in European painting. Murillo is here in depth, Zurbarán's monastic saints and still lifes, Valdés Leal's uncompromising vanitas work, and Velázquez from his Seville years before he left for Madrid. Fourteen rooms run chronologically from the medieval period to the early twentieth century.

It sits on Plaza del Museo, a short walk from the centre but far enough that most visitors doing the cathedral and Alcázar never reach it. On Sundays a painters' market fills the square outside.
