Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) is a modern art museum in Shanghai’s Pudong district, presenting world-class exhibitions and showcasing domestic artists.

The Museum of Art Pudong opened in 2021 on the Huangpu waterfront, designed by Jean Nouvel as a restrained rectangular block clad in stone, with a vertical glazed slot — the Mirror Hall — framing a view straight across the river to the Bund's colonial-era skyline. That framed view is treated as an exhibit in its own right, and it is the building's best idea.

The museum has no significant permanent collection. It operates on major loan exhibitions, partnering with institutions including Tate and the Musée d'Orsay to bring international shows to Shanghai, alongside exhibitions of contemporary Chinese artists. What is on when you visit therefore determines everything, and checking the current programme before booking is not optional here.

The building itself, the river frontage and the rooftop views justify a visit during a strong exhibition and rather less otherwise.

It sits in Lujiazui among the Pudong towers, easily reached by metro and combinable with the Shanghai Tower observation deck.
