Planning your visit
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in Pudong is enormous and aimed squarely at families, covering science, technology and natural history across multiple halls: an indoor rainforest with live animals, an animal world with extensive dioramas, robotics, space, earth sciences and information technology, plus IMAX 3D and dome theatres.
It is one of the most visited museums in China, and that shows — weekends and Chinese school holidays fill it completely, with queues at the popular halls and theatres. Weekday mornings are markedly better.
The building is directly above Science and Technology Museum station on metro line 2, which makes access straightforward. The underground market adjacent to the station entrance is a Shanghai institution in its own right, though a chaotic one.
Note that Shanghai's newer Astronomy Museum and Natural History Museum are separate institutions in different locations, and the three are sometimes confused when booking.
