The Vechaar Utensils Museum holds over 4,500 objects, and its subject is one almost nobody thinks to collect: the everyday vessels of Indian domestic life. Brass, copper, bronze, terracotta and German silver pots, pans, water carriers, spice boxes, nutcrackers, betel-nut cutters, lamps and ritual vessels, some centuries old, gathered by a single collector who began rescuing them as families discarded metal for plastic.

Seen together, they document an entire material culture that has largely vanished within living memory, along with the regional variations in form and the craft traditions that produced them.

The museum sits within Vishalla, a restaurant on the outskirts of Ahmedabad designed as a Gujarati village, serving traditional thali meals on leaf plates with folk music and puppet performances in the evening. The two are inseparable — the museum exists because the restaurant's founder collected the utensils, and most visits combine them.
