Palanga Amber Museum

Located in Palanga’s Tiškevičiai Palace, the museum displays over 28,000 amber pieces, including inclusions of insects and plants.

The Palanga Amber Museum occupies the Tiskeviciai Palace, a neo-Renaissance mansion built for a Polish-Lithuanian noble family in the 1890s, set in a botanical park of 100 hectares that runs down toward the Baltic dunes. The palace and park would justify the visit alone.

Inside are over 28,000 pieces of amber. The inclusions are the collection's strength — insects, spiders, plant fragments and occasionally small vertebrates trapped in resin some 40 million years ago and preserved in three dimensions with a fidelity no other fossil process achieves. One piece, the Sun Stone, is among the largest amber specimens in Europe.

Alongside sit worked amber from prehistory onward: Neolithic ornaments, medieval religious objects, jewellery and contemporary art.

The Baltic coast holds the world's largest amber deposit, and Palanga is Lithuania's principal seaside resort, so the museum sits in exactly the right place.
