The American Bookbinders Museum in San Francisco is the only museum in North America devoted to the craft, and it covers the moment when bookbinding changed from a hand trade to an industrial process — roughly the nineteenth century, when steam power, cloth casing and mechanised sewing turned books from expensive objects into mass commodities.
The collection holds working nineteenth-century equipment: guillotines, sewing frames, standing presses, blocking presses and rounding machines, much of it operable, alongside tools, materials and examples of binding from fine leather work to cheap publishers' cloth.
The social history is part of it. Bookbinding employed large numbers of women in the finishing trades at lower wages than men in the forwarding trades, and the museum covers the labour organising that followed.
Self-guided and audio tours run, and demonstrations happen periodically.
It sits in SoMa, near the Museum of Modern Art and the Contemporary Jewish Museum.
