Amersham Museum occupies a fifteenth-century hall house on the high street of Old Amersham, a Buckinghamshire market town in the Chilterns that survives largely intact because the railway went to the hill above it, leaving the old town to itself.

The building is the first exhibit: a timber-framed medieval house with its original structure visible, extended and altered across five centuries, and the museum interprets it as an object as well as using it as a container.

Displays cover local archaeology, the town's markets and trades, the Amersham Martyrs — Lollards burned for heresy in the sixteenth century — brewing, lacemaking, and the arrival of the Metropolitan Railway that created Metroland and the modern town on the hill.

A physic garden behind the building grows period medicinal plants.

It is small, volunteer-run, and precisely the sort of local museum that repays a visit if you happen to be passing.
