The Anchorage Museum is the largest museum in Alaska and it does three jobs: art, history and science, with Alaska Native cultures running through all three.

The Alaska Exhibition covers the state's history from Indigenous societies through Russian colonisation, the American purchase, gold rushes, the military build-up, statehood and oil. The Art of the North galleries hold work by Alaskan and circumpolar artists, and the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center displays over 600 Alaska Native objects returned on long-term loan from the Smithsonian's collections — repatriated in practice if not in title, and interpreted with Native communities.

The Discovery Center is a hands-on science space for children, with a planetarium.

For visitors, the museum is the best available introduction to a state whose scale, history and Indigenous cultures are genuinely unfamiliar to most Americans, let alone international travellers.

It sits in downtown Anchorage.
