The Museum of the Army occupies the Alcazar of Toledo, and the building carries a contested history. The fortress dominates the city skyline and was besieged in 1936 during the Civil War, when Nationalist defenders held out for over two months against Republican forces — an episode the Franco regime built into a founding myth and commemorated in the rebuilt structure. The museum today presents that history alongside everything else, which remains a delicate matter in Spain.
The collections cover Spanish military history from the medieval period through the empire, the Peninsular War, the colonial conflicts and the twentieth century, with weapons, armour, uniforms, standards, models and artillery. The archaeological remains beneath the building, from Roman through Visigothic and Islamic Toledo, are part of the visit.
The Alcazar's terraces give views over the Tagus gorge and the city.
