Ballenberg is Switzerland assembled in one valley: over 100 original buildings, dismantled across every canton and rebuilt on 66 hectares near Brienz, grouped by region so that visitors move between the distinct building traditions of the Bernese Oberland, Ticino, Valais, Appenzell and the rest.

The differences are the substance. Swiss vernacular architecture varies enormously with altitude, climate, available material and confession — stone in the south, heavy timber in the interior, shingle roofs weighted with rocks in the mountains — and walking between the groups makes that visible in a way no book manages.

Craftspeople work throughout: weavers, cheesemakers, coopers, blacksmiths, bakers and woodcarvers, using period methods. Traditional livestock breeds are kept, and the gardens grow historic crop varieties.

The site is large and outdoors, so allow the best part of a day and check the seasonal opening — it closes over winter.
