In the older tales they are dangerous, stupid, enormously strong, and turned to stone by sunlight — which is why Norwegian landscapes are full of rock formations explained as petrified trolls caught by dawn.

The Troll Museum in Bergen presents that material through art, storytelling and digital technology including augmented reality, covering the folklore properly: trolls, huldra, nisse, draugen and the other figures of Norwegian belief, and the function these stories served in an isolated rural society facing a genuinely hostile landscape.

Theodor Kittelsen's illustrations, which shaped how Norwegians picture these creatures, feature prominently.
