The Markisches Museum is Berlin's city museum, housed in a deliberately eccentric 1901 building that quotes several different periods of Brandenburg architecture at once — a brick fantasy of gables, a tower modelled on a Gothic bishop's palace and a cloister, designed to look centuries old.
The collection covers Berlin from its medieval origins as twin trading towns on the Spree through the Prussian capital, the industrial explosion of the nineteenth century, the Weimar years, National Socialism, division and reunification. Objects, paintings, models, printing presses, mechanical musical instruments and city fragments carry it.
The museum has been undergoing extensive renovation, with parts closed and collections relocated, so checking current status matters before travelling.
It sits by the Spree near the Nikolaiviertel, the reconstructed medieval quarter rebuilt by the GDR in the 1980s, which is usually covered by the same ticket.
