The Museum fur Naturkunde holds the largest mounted dinosaur skeleton in the world: Giraffatitan brancai, over thirteen metres tall, excavated by German expeditions at Tendaguru in what is now Tanzania between 1909 and 1913, and standing in the glass-roofed central hall alongside other Tendaguru finds.
The Tendaguru material's colonial provenance is a live question, and Tanzania has raised the matter of restitution — the museum addresses the excavation history rather than presenting the specimens as neutral scientific objects.
Also here is the best-preserved Archaeopteryx specimen known, the transitional fossil linking dinosaurs and birds, and Tristan Otto, one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus skulls in Europe.
Beyond palaeontology, the collections run to 30 million objects across zoology and mineralogy, with wet collections of preserved specimens in a room of floor-to-ceiling jars that is remarkable in itself.
