The holdings cover the Berlin Secession, Expressionism, Dada, New Objectivity with Otto Dix and George Grosz, the Weimar years, the artists who fled or were suppressed under National Socialism, the divided city's parallel art scenes, and the post-reunification period. Photography and architecture are collected alongside painting and sculpture, on the argument that Berlin's visual history requires all three.
The building is a converted glass warehouse in Kreuzberg, with a large open hall and a striking external staircase.
Its concentration makes it more coherent than a survey museum, and it is markedly less crowded than Museum Island.
