Australia produces the overwhelming majority of the world's precious opal, and the stone is the national gemstone. It forms in ancient sedimentary basins where silica-rich water seeped into cracks and voids over millions of years, and the play of colour comes from microscopic silica spheres diffracting light — which is why an opal changes as you move it.

The Brisbane Opal Museum covers the geology, the mining fields including Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge and Queensland's boulder opal country, the types — black, white, boulder, crystal and matrix — and how quality is judged.

Boulder opal, found only in Queensland, is the local speciality: thin seams of opal in ironstone, cut with the host rock left as a backing.

Fossils replaced by opal, including opalised shells and occasionally bone, are among the more remarkable specimens.

The museum operates alongside a retail operation, which is standard in the field.
