The Canadian Museum of Nature occupies the Victoria Memorial Museum Building, a Tudor-Gothic castle of 1912 that briefly housed Parliament after the 1916 fire on Parliament Hill — the Senate sat in what is now a gallery.
The collections cover Canadian natural history with particular strength in the Arctic, reflecting decades of northern research: Arctic ecology, ice, and the species of a region the museum studies actively.
The fossil galleries hold dinosaurs from Alberta's badlands, and the mammal, bird and water galleries cover Canadian species with a blue whale skeleton suspended in the last of these.
The building's restoration added a glass lantern tower replacing the original stone tower, which sank into the clay and was removed in 1915.
