Mdina is Malta's old walled capital, a silent city of narrow limestone streets where cars are largely banned and a few hundred people still live behind the palace facades. Casa Gourgion is one of those houses, opened to visitors after restoration.
The building is neo-Gothic — an unusual style for Malta, where baroque dominates — and was remodelled in the nineteenth century for the De Piro Gourgion family. The restoration recovered painted ceilings, decorative schemes and architectural detail that had been lost or covered.
The visit covers the rooms as a noble family used them, with furniture, art and objects, and material on the family and on Mdina's aristocratic society, which persisted long after the Knights left.
