Castrum Romano at Sassari is a reconstruction rather than an excavation: a full-scale Roman military fort built to period specification, with palisade, towers, barracks, workshops and command buildings, alongside a reconstructed traditional Sardinian village and a farm with livestock.

Sardinia's Roman history is substantial. The island was taken from Carthage in 238 BC and held for seven centuries, valued for grain and for its position, and the interior resisted for generations — the Romans called the mountainous centre Barbaria, a name that survives as Barbagia.

The park's approach is experiential and educational, with demonstrations of Roman military equipment, drill, crafts and daily life, aimed particularly at school groups and families.

The Sardinian village component covers rural island life and traditional building, which is a genuinely different subject from the Roman material.
