Cat Ba is the largest island in Ha Long Bay, and roughly half of it is national park — limestone karst, tropical forest, mangrove and coral reef, designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The museum at the park entrance covers that ecology: the geology of the karst, the forest types, the caves, and the species. Its most significant subject is the Cat Ba langur, a golden-headed monkey found nowhere else on earth and among the rarest primates in the world — the population fell to around 40 individuals through hunting and has been brought back to somewhere near 80 through a conservation programme the museum documents.

The park itself offers trekking, and the island holds Hospital Cave, a bomb-proof facility built into the limestone during the American war.

Visits typically form part of a wider Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay itinerary.
