The Tharu are the Indigenous people of Nepal's Terai lowlands, and they lived for centuries in a malarial belt that killed outsiders — Tharu populations carry a genetic resistance — which kept the region largely to themselves until DDT eradication in the 1950s opened it to hill migrants and to widespread Tharu dispossession.

The museum near Chitwan covers that culture: the distinctive lattice-and-mud architecture with painted walls, fishing and farming implements, dress, ornament, the stick dance, and the religious practices that blend Hindu and animist elements.

The research centre and library give it a documentary function beyond display, and the museum is community-connected rather than externally curated.
