Citta della Scienza was Italy's first interactive science centre, built on the site of the former Italsider steelworks at Bagnoli in Naples's western industrial zone — an area the city has spent decades trying to reclaim.

Its most notable feature is the planetarium, among the largest and most advanced in Europe. Permanent exhibitions cover the human body with a substantial anatomical and physiological gallery, marine biology and the Mediterranean, insects, astronomy and environmental sustainability, with hands-on stations throughout.

The centre suffered a major arson attack in 2013 that destroyed the main exhibition building, and it has been progressively rebuilt since — a fact that shapes what is currently open, so checking before visiting is worthwhile.

It functions as a science education institution for the region as much as a visitor attraction, and it is strongly oriented toward schools and families.
