Coral Castle Museum in Homestead, Florida, showcases massive stone carvings created by Edward Leedskalnin between 1923 and 1951 as a tribute to his fiancée.

Edward Leedskalnin was a Latvian immigrant of slight build who spent 28 years, from 1923, quarrying and carving over 1,100 tons of coral limestone in southern Florida, working alone and at night, refusing to let anyone watch. He said he had discovered the secret of how the pyramids were built.

The result is Coral Castle: walls, a throne room, a sundial, tables, chairs, a well, a bathtub and a nine-ton gate so precisely balanced that a child could push it open with a finger. He moved the whole structure ten miles by truck in the 1930s, again without observation.

He said he built it for Agnes Skuvst, the sixteen-year-old who broke off their engagement in Latvia the day before the wedding.

The engineering is explicable — block and tackle, leverage, patience — but the persistence is not, and that is what the place actually memorialises.
