Portlligat is where Dali actually lived and worked for most of his life — a fishing hamlet in a sheltered cove near Cadaques, where he bought a one-room hut in 1930 and expanded it over decades into a rambling white labyrinth of connected fishermen's cottages on different levels.

The house is far stranger and more revealing than the theatre-museum at Figueres. His studio has a slot in the floor so large canvases could be raised and lowered while he painted seated. Stuffed animals, dried flowers, a stuffed polar bear in the entrance hall, mirrors positioned to catch the first light on the bed, an egg on the roof, and a phallic swimming pool with Michelin men and Pirelli furniture.

The Cap de Creus landscape outside recurs throughout his paintings, and seeing it explains a great deal.

Visits are by timed guided tour in very small groups, and booking well ahead is essential — capacity is severely limited.
