The Pontiac Transportation Museum in Michigan highlights the city’s rich legacy in transportation, featuring vehicles and artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Pontiac made vehicles before it made Pontiacs. The Michigan city produced horse-drawn carriages in quantity in the nineteenth century — the Pontiac Buggy Company among them — and that manufacturing base converted to motor vehicles, giving General Motors one of its principal production centres and the Pontiac marque its name.

The museum covers that arc: carriages, early motor vehicles, the Oakland and Pontiac cars, GM Truck and Coach which built buses and military vehicles here, and the eventual collapse — Pontiac the brand was discontinued in 2010, and Pontiac the city has struggled with the consequences of automotive decline.

The collection includes vehicles, artefacts and material on the workforce and the community that grew around the plants.

It opened relatively recently, driven by local volunteers determined to preserve the record.
