Dien Bien Phu ended French colonial rule in Indochina. In 1954 French forces occupied a valley in the northwest highlands expecting to draw the Viet Minh into open battle; instead Giap's army dragged artillery through mountains the French believed impassable, dug it into the surrounding hills, and besieged the base for 56 days until it fell. France withdrew, Vietnam was partitioned, and the American involvement followed.

The Victory Museum covers the campaign in detail: the logistics, the bicycles that carried supplies along jungle tracks, the artillery, the trench systems, and the personal effects of participants.

A vast panoramic painting installed in 2022, over 130 metres long, depicts the battle in a circular gallery.

The battlefield itself surrounds the town — hills A1 and Him Lam, the French command bunker, and the cemeteries.
