The Verkehrsmuseum occupies the Johanneum, a sixteenth-century building on the Neumarkt originally built as stables for the Saxon court — the ornate exterior and the ramp that horses climbed to the upper floor survive.
The railway collection is the strength, reflecting Saxony's importance in German rail history: locomotives including the Muldenthal of 1861, one of the oldest surviving German engines, alongside an enormous model railway layout that runs to a timetable.
Road transport covers early automobiles, motorcycles and bicycles, with particular attention to Saxon manufacturers — the region produced Horch, Audi and DKW, which combined into Auto Union and eventually into modern Audi.
Aviation and shipping fill further halls.
The building sits in the reconstructed Baroque centre near the Frauenkirche.
