The Ethnographic Museum in Huye — still widely called Butare, its former name — holds the best ethnographic collection in Rwanda, and it was a gift from Belgium in 1989 marking twenty-five years of independence. Seven galleries cover the country's geology and landscape, pre-colonial history and social organisation, agriculture and cattle-keeping, craft traditions including basketry and pottery, dress and ornament, and ritual life. The imigongo geometric painting and the woven agaseke baskets are particular strengths.

Its real value lies in showing Rwandan society as it was structured before the colonial period, and in addressing — carefully — how the Hutu, Tutsi and Twa categories functioned historically, and how colonial administration hardened them into rigid ethnic classifications backed by identity cards. That background is essential to understanding 1994, and this museum supplies it in a way the genocide memorials, which deal with the events themselves, do not attempt.

Traditional dance performances by Intore troupes are sometimes staged in the grounds.
