Museo dell’Olio di Seggiano
The Museo dell’Olio di Seggiano offers an innovative journey through Seggiano’s history and culture, focusing on the renowned Seggiano DOP extra virgin olive oil.
Planning your visit
The Museo dell'Olio di Seggiano is an ecomuseum, which means the collection is really the landscape outside it. Seggiano sits on the slopes of Monte Amiata in southern Tuscany, and it gives its name to a DOP extra virgin olive oil made largely from the olivastra seggianese, a local cultivar that survives at altitudes and in frosts that would kill most olives — the trees here grow higher up the mountain than olives generally manage in Italy.
The museum, opened in 2012, covers that: the botany of the cultivar, the terraced groves and dry-stone walls that make cultivation possible on the slope, the harvesting and milling process, and the ethnography of a farming community organised around a single crop. It functions as visitor centre and laboratory as much as display, with tasting as a structured part of the visit rather than a shop add-on.
Learning to taste oil properly — the bitterness and pepperiness that indicate freshness and polyphenol content, rather than the mildness many buyers mistake for quality — is genuinely useful and changes how you shop afterwards.
Seggiano is deep in rural Tuscany and needs a car. The area also holds Daniel Spoerri's sculpture garden nearby. Bookable options combine museum entry with guided oil tasting. Current availability is shown below.
