The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is consistently overshadowed by the Guggenheim ten minutes away, and it is the better collection. Founded in 1908, it holds over 10,000 works spanning the twelfth century to the present across three strands: old masters including El Greco, Ribera, Zurbaran, Goya and Van Dyck; Basque art from the nineteenth century onward, which is the section you will not find elsewhere; and modern and contemporary work including Gauguin, Cassatt, Bacon and Chillida.

The Basque holdings are the reason to prioritise it. Regional painters and sculptors — Zuloaga, Regoyos, Iturrino, Oteiza, Chillida — are shown in depth, and they document a distinct cultural identity through periods of industrialisation, war and repression that the international collections cannot.

It sits at the edge of Dona Casilda park, an easy walk from the Guggenheim, and is far less crowded. A recent expansion by Foster and Partners has been reshaping the building.
