The Finnish Railway Museum sits in the right place: Hyvinkaa was a railway town, and the museum occupies the original station and depot area of the Hyvinkaa-Hanko line, so the buildings themselves are exhibits. Finland's railway history has a particular character — built to the Russian broad gauge under imperial rule, developed through independence, war and reconstruction — and the collection traces it through locomotives, rolling stock, and the working lives of railway staff.

The imperial carriages are the standout: saloon coaches used by Russian tsars, including Alexander III and Nicholas II, preserved with their interiors, alongside Finnish presidential stock. Steam and diesel locomotives fill the depot halls, and the exhibitions on railway occupations — signalling, permanent way, station work — give the machinery its human context.

Hyvinkaa is around fifty kilometres north of Helsinki and connected by frequent commuter trains, which is the appropriate way to arrive. Allow two to three hours.
