The Museo del Baile Flamenco was founded by Cristina Hoyos, one of the significant flamenco dancers of the twentieth century, and it exists to explain an art form that most visitors to Seville encounter only as a performance. The museum occupies an eighteenth-century house in Santa Cruz, and its displays cover the palos — the distinct song forms, from the anguished siguiriya to the celebratory alegrias — the history of flamenco among Andalusia's Roma communities, the costumes, and the technique of the dance itself, using video, projection and interactive material.

The value is in the ordering. Flamenco makes considerably more sense once you understand that different palos carry different emotional registers and rhythmic structures, and that the interaction between singer, guitarist and dancer is improvised within those forms rather than choreographed.

The museum stages live performances in its courtyard most evenings, generally regarded as among the more serious offerings in a city where flamenco is heavily commercialised. Workshops are available for those who want to try the footwork.
