The Freud Museum is the house where Sigmund Freud lived for the last year of his life, having fled Vienna in 1938 after the Anschluss — his escape secured through diplomatic pressure and a ransom paid to the Nazi authorities. His sisters, who could not leave, died in the camps. What makes the museum extraordinary is that his study was preserved exactly as he arranged it, first by his daughter Anna, who lived in the house until 1982, and then as a museum.

The couch is there, draped in its Iranian rug, with the chair positioned behind where he sat out of the patient's sight. So is the collection that surrounds it: more than 2,000 antiquities — Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Chinese figures crowded across the desk and shelves — which Freud collected obsessively and used as analogies for the analytic work of excavating buried material. Seeing the density of it explains something about him that the writing does not.

Anna Freud's rooms upstairs cover her own significant contribution to child psychoanalysis, and temporary exhibitions address psychoanalysis and art, including its influence on Surrealism.
