The Gothenburg Museum of Art houses one of Northern Europe’s foremost art collections, featuring works from the 15th century to today, including masterpieces by Rembrandt, Picasso, and van Gogh.

Planning your visit

The Gothenburg Museum of Art's real distinction is the Fürstenberg Gallery on the top floor, and it is one of the finest single rooms of Nordic art anywhere. Pontus and Göthilda Fürstenberg were patrons who bought Scandinavian artists systematically in the 1880s and 1890s, and their collection came to the museum intact: Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Bruno Liljefors, Ernst Josephson, Edvard Munch, Christian Krohg and the Danish Skagen painters, hung together in the period when Nordic art found its own voice against French academic training.

Around it the collection runs from the fifteenth century to the present, including Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh, with strong twentieth-century Swedish holdings and contemporary exhibitions.

The building sits at the head of Götaplatsen, the civic square at the top of Kungsportsavenyn, behind Milles's Poseidon fountain — the city's symbol, and the subject of considerable local amusement regarding its anatomy.

Allow two hours, with most of it upstairs. Bookable options include entry tickets with pickup. Current availability is listed below.
