Hammond Castle Museum

Hammond Castle Museum, built between 1926 and 1929, was the home and laboratory of inventor John Hays Hammond Jr., known as the ‘Father of Radio Control.’ The museum blends medieval, Gothic, and French village architectural styles, offering visitors a unique historical and cultural experience in Massachusetts.

John Hays Hammond Jr. held over 400 patents and is generally credited as the father of radio control — his work on guided torpedoes and remote-controlled vessels underpins modern drone and missile guidance. With the proceeds he built himself a castle on the Gloucester shore between 1926 and 1929, and used it as both home and laboratory.

The building is a deliberate collage: medieval, Gothic and Romanesque elements, some of them genuine architectural fragments imported from Europe, arranged around an indoor courtyard with a pool he could fill with fresh or salt water, and a Great Hall containing an 8,200-pipe organ he designed himself. Roman and medieval stonework is embedded throughout, and the whole thing overlooks the Atlantic from a rocky headland.

The mix of serious invention and theatrical medievalism is what makes it memorable — this is a scientist's house built as a fantasy, and both halves are on display.
