Icelandic Seal Center

The Icelandic Seal Center in Hvammstangi is a research and exhibition center dedicated to studying and showcasing the lives of seals found in and around Iceland. It also serves as a tourist information center for Húnaþing vestra, offering insights into local wildlife and attractions.

The Icelandic Seal Center exists because the Vatnsnes peninsula, on which it sits, is the most reliable place in Iceland to see seals from land. Both harbour and grey seals haul out on the rocks and sandbars around the peninsula, and the centre functions simultaneously as research institute, exhibition and tourist information office for the region.

The exhibition covers seal biology, the two species' differing habits, the ecology of the North Atlantic, and the long human relationship with seals in Iceland — hunting for meat, skin and oil, the folklore of selkies and seal-women, and the shift toward conservation and wildlife tourism as an economic alternative. Research conducted here monitors population trends, which have been declining.

The practical value is the information: staff know where the seals currently are, since haul-out sites shift with tide and season, and that guidance materially improves the chance of seeing them.
