St Petersburg, Florida, has become an unlikely centre for glass art — the Chihuly Collection is here, and the Imagine Museum, opened in 2018, holds one of the largest collections of contemporary American studio glass anywhere.

The Studio Glass movement began in the early 1960s, when Harvey Littleton and Dominick Labino developed a small furnace that allowed artists to blow glass in their own studios rather than only in industrial settings. That technical change turned glass from a factory craft into an artistic medium, and the museum traces the sixty years since through work by Littleton, Chihuly, Marvin Lipofsky, Lino Tagliapietra and a long list of others, alongside international artists.

The material rewards seeing in person more than most — colour, transparency and the way light moves through the pieces do not photograph well, and the lighting design here takes that seriously.
