MIAC sits inside Cinecittà, the studio complex Mussolini built in 1937 with the slogan that cinema is the strongest weapon, and which went on to produce Italian neorealism, Fellini's films, and the Hollywood epics shot in Rome in the 1950s and 60s — Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, and later Gangs of New York.
The museum itself is not a display of props but a multimedia environment: archival footage from Italian cinema, television and radio, edited thematically and projected across large screens and immersive rooms, arranged by subject rather than chronology — power, the body, comedy, the economic boom, terrorism. Italy's audiovisual history is treated as a single continuous cultural record.
It occupies a former film-development plant on the studio lot, and combining it with the Cinecittà backlot tour — where surviving standing sets including ancient Rome and Renaissance Florence can be walked — makes the fuller visit.
